Sandwiches Informal
Informal 725 17 Ave. SW 403 455-7255
A sandwich restaurant! These are usually difficult to review as sandwiches are so easy to make at home that they are usually boring and over–priced when one considers what really goes into them. So it was with some reluctance and expensive past memories that we entered Alumni. The setting was indeed based on a traditional corner sandwich bar, but done with class, putting a good distance between tables. And as for the sandwiches? Excellent. There are traditional names on the menu, like the grilled cheese and the double burger, but these are done up with style and deliciousness. And the new items are intriguing and tasty. This was definitely not a place for either boring or over-priced.
Note 1: One trend that bothers us at most deli establishments right now is that when one orders a pop, for example a root beer or cream soda, one is usually presented with a small bottle of supposedly “gourmet” quality at a ridiculous price. Not here, the root beer was in a decent sized bottle at an acceptable cost.
Note 2: The most common failure of sandwiches when purchased at restaurants is the bread/filling ratio. You end up either eating a loaf of bread with a slice of corned beef and and dab of mustard in the middle, or you are caught in the impossible dilemma of attempting to munch down a huge inflated wonder that won’t fit in your mouth and which you are afraid to set down on the table for fear that it will fall apart. Again Alumni gets it right. Bread, sufficient; filling, deliciously eatable.
