Since coming to Calgary in 1977, we have heard that development of the East Village was coming. Well, it is here. And one of the first places to open is the old Simmons Building, all fixed up and fitted out for Phil & Sebastian’s Coffee Company, the Sidewalk Citizen Bakery & Deli, and charbar. It’s charbar we visited first for lunch. Its speciality is grilled meat with a Argentinian flare, though unlike some other such restaurants, this one caters vegetarians as well as carnivores. The space is open and bright with a sense of the history of the building incorporated into twenty–first century glass and metal. The service is friendly, the food is wholesome and well–cooked, and the portions are large. We’ll have to go back again to try dessert. I can see this rapidly becoming a favourite stopping place for the residents of the surrounding condos, and a go–to place for the business crowd.

Good vegetarian selection.
