One thing that amazes many when they first arrive in Calgary is how many Danish people they encounter. Of course, what they are really experiencing is the reality that so many Calgarians have become honorary Danes through their involvement in the Danish Canadian Club. Over the years this has proven to be a popular place to hold business lunches and to gather for dinner, Saturday brunch or even some major celebrations. Yes, it is a private club, but joining is not difficult—basically show up and pay.
Recently there have been big changes here, probably as the original Danes and their families have integrated into the society around them. The old, loved, and familiar building of 11 Avenue Southwest has been sold, and they now share residence with the Austrian Canadian Club. This joining shows up primarily in the food. The menus of the two groups have been merged, ultimately giving a greater variety to all those who visit.
We haven’t visited the new site yet, but hope that the new set up will revitalize the concept.
