In 2024, this Centre Street North gem was listed in the top 100 pizza places in the world. (Yes, you read that correctly.)
So, of course, we had to try it. And it was certainly worth the try.
One problem North American pizza restaurants have is cultural, because most people over here don’t realize that authentic Italian pizza is quite simple compared to the fully smothered pies we are used to. And they usually have fresh tomatoes and herbs as a topping. Places like Pizzeria da Michele or any of the other famous haunts of Naples, for example, have very few choices on the menu and most of these, most of us would dismiss as very plain pizzas, the favourite being Margherita with is crust, tomatoes and/or tomato sauce, a little cheese, and fresh basil. The loaded shells we get here with pepperoni, green pepper, mushrooms, ground beef, onions, porcupine and olives are practically unknown. (And please, don’t even mention pineapple to an Italian.) So what Pizza Culture has brilliantly done is to serve the traditional dishes from various parts of Italy and then added other selections with more varied toppings for the Canadian palette. And these delightful offerings are served in a friendly atmosphere which has the aroma and chatter of any good restaurant in Italy. And don’t overlook the other items on the menu, including the antipastos and desserts. Everything is well worth a try.
