Thisis a new review of Roy’s who have changed location a couple of times recently. Now they are settled in the courtyard of an office building on Macleod Trail. And we must admit the transition confused us—in a good way. What it comes down to is this: First we entered what used to be an elegant, take-your-love-here-for-Valentines kind of restaurant to discover that it is now a fast food joint. But still, we ended up having some of the best Korean food in the city at the most reasonable price, eating it in a food court with wood and plastic cutlery from beautiful restaurant-style platters. It rather makes the mind spin; not because of the goodness of the food or the service, but because the setting, and the service and the food as so incongruous together. We even had trouble categorizing Roy's. Is it fast food or gourmet? We decided on fast food because of the eating utensils. But once you find it and come to terms with this stream-lined gourmet format, you’ll love it. In fact, maybe this is the gourmet of the 2000s—more casual with less stress on the staff, but still great hospitality and food.

For an even more casual, fast setting visit royskitchenyyc at 2024 4 Street SW.

And no, they don’t take reservations because it’s fast food.
